Chapter Eleven
AN UNSEASONABLE cold snap had blown through Michigan the day before. While the calendar confirmed it was midsummer, the weather suggested otherwise. Nash held out a jacket for Joshua to shrug into and then grabbed another one from the closet for himself. July and he was wearing a coat.
Fucking Michigan weather.
They stepped out the front door and Nash shivered as the cold wind hit his exposed neck and skittered down his spine. He zipped up his coat before shoving his hands into the deep pockets. “Jesus, I’ve heard of Christmas in July, but not winter,” he teased. “You would have to pick today to want to explore the property.”
Joshua tipped his head back and looked up at the dark overcast sky. “I love this weather. I’m not a huge fan of summer, or winter for that matter. I’d be perfectly happy with this temperature all year-round.”
“Don’t you dare wish away my nice weather,” Nash chastised lightly. “I could compromise on say… seventies year-round but the fifties and sixties, nope. A little too chilly for me.”
“Seventies, huh?” Joshua asked with a skeptical expression. Then he grinned and nodded. “Deal.”
They walked shoulder to shoulder past the workshop and down the lane that led to the woods beyond. Neither of them said anything. Nash was deep in thought, playing over and over in his head what had occurred the night before. To others, it might not have been the same success it was to Nash, but learning he could easily read the small changes in Joshua and discovering how much pain to inflict before he got a reaction was huge. For the first time since meeting Joshua, Nash thought he might actually be able to handle the man’s issues. He was happy over the events and also stunned at the way their lovemaking had gone. And that’s what it was in the end. Not fucking, not simply getting a nut, but something more, a true connection forged. Or maybe it was simply an evolution of that spark Joshua had ignited in him the first time Nash had spotted him. Nash kept glancing at Joshua, wondering if he was also evaluating the evening before. But Joshua didn’t appear to be thinking much beyond what he was seeing, taking in everything around him with a childlike wonder.
Stepping into the tree line and onto the well-worn footpath, Joshua whistled. “Wow, this is beautiful.” He inhaled deeply. “And it smells good too.”
Nash was extremely proud of his land. The first time he’d set foot in the house, he hadn’t been impressed. It had been dated, and the fact that every wall had been covered with a horrible floral wallpaper and an equally ugly matching border nearly had him running from the place. It was the large workshop and land that had him signing on the dotted line. Being able to enjoy the outdoors and the seclusion the property afforded him made all those hours of scraping off the wallpaper worth it. Still, he’d never really thought about how the land smelled.
